Why scales are [not] important
In my opinion, it’s not important to play scales just for the sake of it. If a new adult student comes to me wanting to play a certain Bob Dylan chord chart, I do not insist that their musical journey starts off with learning scales. If a teenager is just barely hanging on to piano, but they are loving improvising and perhaps learning just one contemporary piece, I am not going to insist they spend any of their precious practice time on scales or arpeggios.
